How music and slogans unite protesters Music builds bonds that are often more genuine than those made solely via speaking.
Of course, the form and function of extremely repetitious group chanting and uplifting tunes drawn from gospel music are vastly different. Nonetheless, I refer to both of them as "music" because they use auditory characteristics like rhythm, pitch contour, and timbre to express meaning that transcends language.
Rather than simply amplifying the words (after all, protest chants and songs aren't supposed to reveal anything we haven't heard before, and it's unlikely anyone needs to be reminded why they're protesting), music is important for expressing political messages because it fosters emotional connection and social cohesion, even among strangers. It accomplishes this by forming a physical bond between individuals. Music, in some ways, serves as a social glue that links the minds and bodies of people who make it.
This link is based on two characteristics that work together to distinguish music from other types of human communication. The first is that music's meaning is purposefully unclear - to put it another way, music is referentially ambiguous. To various listeners, or even to the same individual on different occasions, the same song might have distinct meanings.
